Oregon Anvil Fest
8 ~ 11 June 2023
The below is the letter we sent out 10 October 2021 mentioning my retirement from Race Directing. The link above will take you to Craig’s web pages for the USA Ultra Triathlon races he will be directing starting with the March race next year.
After 23 years in the race business and 16 years of owning USA Ultra Tri, I have made the decision to retire.
When I retired from the military in 1999, I considered taking a civil service job but decided to pursue my passion full time. Being involved with all of you, along with the friendships forged around the world and our incredible staff and volunteers, have filled my soul in ways I could never have imagined.
This decision to retire was in my mind for a few years, but I had not found the right person, someone who understands what we do, has the same passion for athletes and our team, and who would continue to run our races with the Anvil Family at the forefront of every decision.
Beginning In 2023, Craig Braun of Mammoth Endurance will become the new owner of USA Ultra Tri. He is a man of good family values, dedicated to the ultra-sport world and the athletes who participate, and is committed to our USA Ultra Tri team. He will shadow our events in 2022, so you will see him at our three events and get to know him, his wife Maddie, and their son Leo. Teri Smith will continue to work as a race director, adding consistency and heart to our three races.
I am excited to have found the type of person I hoped would take over this business and look forward to watching USA Ultra Tri blossom under Craig’s leadership. Cindy and I will be seeing all of you in 2023 and beyond as we enjoy traveling and spending quality time together in retirement.
Thank you for allowing me to do what I love all these years. I cannot wait for 2022 and seeing as many of you as possible in Florida, Oregon, and Virginia.

“There is no sport on the planet I love more than endurance racing. Having the privilege to be next in line for these events is a massive honor for me. I’ve been producing endurance races my entire life, and I’m excited to work under Steve and the team for the next 12 months to learn, build new relationships, connect with the athletes and (USA Ultra Tri) crew, and carry on the values put in place that make these events what they are.” – Craig Braun, Mammoth Endurance
